Common Questions.
None whatsoever. Most people who walk through the door have never trained any martial art. Our Foundation classes and free trial are designed specifically for people starting from zero. Your instructor and training partners will guide you through everything.
For your first class, comfortable athletic clothing you can move in is fine - shorts and a t-shirt, or compression gear. If you decide to continue training, you will need a Gi. We can advise you on where to purchase one. You do not need to buy anything before your first session.
There is no fixed timeline. BJJ promotions are earned, not scheduled. Your instructor will promote you when they genuinely believe you are ready - based on your understanding of techniques, mat time, and attitude. At Artevō, a belt means something.
Yes. BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for children because it is fundamentally about control, not striking. Students learn to apply techniques safely and tap out when caught in a submission. Our junior instructors are experienced with children and all sparring is age-appropriate and supervised.
For beginners, two to three times per week is ideal. Consistency over a long period matters far more than intensity over a short one. Training twice a week for three years will take you further than training every day for six months.
We offer Adult Signature (unlimited classes), Adult Core (2 classes per week), Kids Core (2 classes per week), Kids Explorer (1 class per week), and a Family plan at $48 per member per week, capped at $120 a week for the whole family. Private lessons and casual drop-ins are also available. All plans have a one-calendar-month minimum term and then run month to month. No long contracts. See our Memberships page for full details.
Please speak with your instructor before class if you have an injury. BJJ has a wide range of intensity levels and in many cases lighter drilling is possible while recovering. We will never ask you to do something that risks aggravating an injury.
We support students who want to compete, but it is entirely optional. Competition is a powerful accelerator for growth. Your instructor can advise you on suitable events when you are ready. Many students train purely for personal development and never compete - both paths are equally valued.
Adult and junior classes run on separate timetables. However, we encourage family training - parents in the adult class while children are in the junior class is a common and healthy pattern.
